NOVA SCOTIA: 7 Days
Bay of Fundy and Cape Breton Island
This Nova Scotia holiday tour features two of Canada's major natural attractions, the Bay of Fundy, where you will witness the world's highest tides and the fabulous Highland Region of Cabot Breton Island.
DAY 1-3
The first destination on the program is Grand Pré National Historic Site on Fundy's Minas Basin. This exceptional site commemorates the tragic deportation of
the French Acadians from Nova Scotia in 1755 at the outset of the Seven Years War which permanently quashed France's colonial ambitions in North America.
This eastern end of the Annapolis Valley is a scenic, pastoral fruit growing region with extensive dykelands that were originally reclaimed from sea during
the seventeenth century by enterprising Acadian farmers.
From Grand Pré, our tour continues around the shoreline of the Bay of Fundy to Parrsboro, Five Islands,
and Cape d'Or. Along this amazing shore, we witness the rhythmic oscillation and awesome dimensions of the world's highest tides. The captivating landforms and
rock formations that define and distinguish the Fundy Shore are a porthole to one of the most intriguing periods of the earth's history, including the dawning of
the age of dinosaurs and the rifting of the super continent Pangea.
DAY 4-6
Our tour of Cape Breton Island includes the island's Gaelic heartland, Mabou, and the distinctive Acadian Region further north is one of the areas where Nova Scotia's
deported Acadians found a new homeland following their tragic deportation in 1755. Here, we begin our tour of the Cabot Trail: one of the most scenic coastal mountain
drives in the world. The Cabot Trail snakes and winds along the shoreline, through the coastal mountains, and up onto the highland plateau of the Highlands National Park.
The scenery is spectacular, and moose, bald eagles, and pilot whales are often sighted. An optional whale watching cruise (extra $) is available in season.
The next segment of the tour is devoted to Fortress Louisbourg National Historic Site on the eastern side of the island. Fortress Louisbourg, the largest historic
reconstruction in North America, was a formidable French stronghold in Acadia. Louisbourg fell to the British in 1758 ending 150 years of conflict between the two
colonizing nations in Atlantic Canada. Returning to the mainland, At Baddeck, we stop to visit the Alexander Graham Bell NationalHistoric Site.
DAY 7
Back on the mainland, on the return trip to Halifax, we will spend time in the historic Town of Pictou where Nova Scotia's first Scottish residents settled in 1773.
On the Pictou waterfront we visit the Hector Heritage Quay Interpretative Centre. The Quay tells the story of Scottish immigration and settlement in Nova Scotia and
includes an exact replica of the ship Hector which carried the first settlers to Pictou.
Departs Halifax.
